Stories

Yesterday I sat with a friend and we shared stories about our families.  You know the stories, the ones that might be told around the table at a family gathering.  It might start out, “Do you remember the time…”  or in my family it often started with, “Years ago…”

As my friend and I laughed at the silly quirks of our ancestors we reflected on how their stories helped us today.  We found courage in the way our family members faced uncertainty and didn’t back down.  We found joy in the ways they overcame obstacles and we smiled at the way our ancestors Faith played a huge part in the way they approached life.

This morning during my quiet time (QT) I read My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers; a wonderful book full of daily devotions for each day of the year.  Today’s devotion for May 15th made me realize the importance of stories once again.

“God is the Master Designer, and He allows adversities into your life to see if you can jump over them properly–‘By my God I can leap over a wall’ (Psalm 18:29).  God will never shield you from the requirements of being His son or daughter.” And later in the passage Oswald Chambers wrote, “The only proper goal of life is that we manifest the Son of God–.”

So when we hear about someone who overcame something, who “survived” a situation that looked like it might just prove too much, we can find encouragement to continue on with our path.

Our stories of growth bless others in their stories.

Matthew West, a contemporary Christian artist, wrote a song a few years ago called, The Story of Your Life.  It is the title of an album that he wrote using stories fans sent to him.  I love the hope, the joy, the survival, the overcoming, that he shares in the songs on this album.  If you haven’t heard it, download from iTunes, check it out at your library.  It is so worth the time to listen.

The Story of Your Life

“Is this the end?
Or only the beginning?
The second chance
You never thought you’d get

The question is
Will you do something with it
Or spend your days
Lost in your regret

This is the story of your life
You decide
How the rest is gonna read
This is your chance between the lines
To redefine what kind of legacy you leave
This is the story of your life
And it’s a story worth telling

Breathe in deep
Feel your heart still breathing
Let’s go see the reason you’re alive
Oh, you are here
and love is up to something
So take your fear
and leave it all behind

This is the story of your life
You decide
How the rest is gonna read
This is your chance between the lines
To redefine what kind of legacy you leave
This is the story of your life
And it’s a story worth telling

This is the joy
And it’s the pain
And all the pages in between
Your finest hour
Your weakest moment
It’s where you’ve been
It’s where you are
It’s where you’re going

This is the story of your life
You decide
How the rest is gonna read
This is your chance between the lines
To redefine the kind of legacy you leave
This is the story of your life
Go tell the story of your life
Cause it’s a story worth telling
It’s worth telling

Is this the end?
Or only the beginning?”

So tell your story.  You never know who needs to hear it.
