Today in America many have taken a moment to stop in silence and remember the events on the morning of September 11, 2001. Almost all of us can recall where we were when we first heard the news or saw the footage of airplanes used to cause destruction and death to thousands.
I passed an American flag flying at half-staff and I found myself silently shaking my head at the loss, the sorrow, the ache of empty chairs, the missing smiles in family photos, the treasured memories that can never be shared. And I exhale. I cannot change the past. I can only pray.
There is a movie right now in the theaters that I find perfect in its timing. The War Room is a powerful movie that reminds us that when we are feeling helpless to change the things in our world, we can actually be full of power. God’s power. We will never be able to forcefully change the hearts and lives of others- anything that is forced is met back with force.
The aftermath of September 11, 2001 shows that. Our Armed Forces rose up to find the people responsible and bring them to justice. The force that was pushed on us, was used to push back on others. In physical battle this is the right action and a necessary one.
But we are not fighting a physical battle. We are fighting a spiritual one. It is a battle that must be fought on our knees. Our prayers are powerful weapons, our God is a mighty God. When we look at the world around us in upheaval and turmoil, destroying and denying the very value of the human soul God created– it should drive us to our knees, not our news-feeds to complain.
We as believers are empowered with the Holy Spirit to speak the Truth of the Word of God with the authority that comes from the Throne Room of Heaven. I believe all too often, we think we have nothing in our “arsenal” to fight against the evils of this world. What a lie.
We are challenged and reminded by Paul of the battle we face every day in Ephesians 6:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
We are stronger than we think we are– God is faithful, we forget, and then we are reminded.
Heavenly Father, You and You alone are able to reach the hearts of the lost. You and You alone, are able to change the events in our lives. We cannot do anything. We are like helpless little kittens in a storm. But You created the storm– You are the Master and Commander of the Universe and we come to You now- seeking forgiveness for our faithlessness, for our fickle hearts. We cry out to You for wisdom in this age of anger, destruction, and pain. I pray not for the changing of the events and experiences, but for the strength to stand up under it. I pray we as believers will not whine when we are persecuted– You foretold that experience before You went to the Cross.
Please use the movie The War Room to remind us, to revive us to seek Your face, to remember the Power of the Lord is not tired, not expired, but very available, very alive, very available– when we choose to connect to it. Use this season of our lives to drive us to our knees again, to seek You- to know You- to grow deeper in love with You.
Father, these events are not the end. They are the beginning. I pray we will not falter, we will not waiver as believers. Draw us to Heaven’s Throne Room, that our hands and feet and our Love for You will remind others of Who You are and can be in their lives.
