Up and down, in and out

Israel found themselves in a cycle of sin and consequences for decades.  Their choices seemed like “good ideas” and yet, again and again they found that the decisions were anything but good ones.

Their decisions led to the loss of the Ark of the Covenant to the Philistines.  Through a series of events, the Ark was returned and now in 1 Samuel 7: 2-17 Israel comes to the Lord and confesses their sins.  Samuel tells them to “clean house” and get rid of the things that are elements from their sins (1 Samuel 7:2-3).

Soon after their confession and repentance the Philistines came to wage war against Israel (1 Samuel 7:7-8). It was a time to show that their confession and repentance weren’t just words.  It was time to follow through.  Israel called out to God to protect them, to save them.  And He did (1 Samuel 7:10-11).

Why?

The Israelites were in sin, they confessed, they repented or turned from their sins, and they  followed through with the choice to seek God and no other gods or idols. When they were down and out their realized it was time to stop digging themselves deeper into the hole and instead seek God, call out to Him and He brought them up from dispair and dishonor.

God redeemed them (1 Samuel 7:12-14).

This is what God wants to do with us. He wants to redeem us, restore us.  Make us whole and bring us up out of the hole we have dug.

Our God is a God who saves, our God is a God who saves… Let God arise, let God arise, our God reigns now and forever… –Chris Tomlin

Thank you God for this amazing gift.
