windows, doors, and hallways

This side of Heaven, we like to have our lives in neat little compartments, we strive for order, structure, control.  Every September, we go to the stores to buy school supplies, shining, new, waiting to be used.  Every January, stores sell products to “organize” your home– containers, folders, boxes, labels, all under the guise that if you organize your homes you will have control of your life.

There is no box sold, no label created, that is going to bring order to your life.

When we forget that God is the One who is the Author of our lives, we miss the opportunity to learn His plans, His purposes for which we are a part.

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,  in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.  And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,  who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:11 NIV).

When we don’t understand why God has closed the door, but will open the window– maybe He is showing us the vistas we will cross, when we trust His plans and organization in our lives.  When God opens that door, to call us through to the next adventure, are we willing to put on our hiking boots and follow Him?

And for those rare moments, when it seems like the windows aren’t quite opened and the door is definitely closed, what will we do?  We will anticipate.  We will chose to prepare ourselves for whatever God has planned next.  We can choose to praise God in the hallways.  After all, hallways are what connect us from one place to the next.  Just as God is preparing our hearts to do the next thing, to follow God to fulfill our roles in His great story.

Whether you are facing a window, door, or a hallway, choose to trust God for the order of your life.  Trust Him to know you more intimately than anyone else, to know your part to share His story with the world.  To share His love, His mercy, His grace with those who are desperately seeking that kind of order, that kind of release of the controls.

Allow God in, allow God to move in your life.  Allow God to take control of your life– your views will become something you never imagined.  You will climb mountains you never knew existed.  You will be called to prepare for things you never dreamed or imagined.

And it will be all for His glory. Amen.
