Just amazing

Saturday night my son picked the movie
to watch. He surprised me by picking AMAZING GRACE.
The power of this story rumbles through my soul and heart every time I see it. William Wilberforce’s tenacious work to end the slave trade in the English Empire is an incredible story.

As I watched it this time I saw it through the eyes of Easter.

We are all slaves; bound, sold, used, abused. We are all lost, without hope, without any chance of being free.

Enter Jesus.

He came, He spoke words of hope, healing, performed miracles no one ever dreamed.

Then He died. In His death He bought each and every one of us. Our lives bear the stamp of “Paid in Full.” Jesus said on the Cross, “It is Finished,” the phrase was used to mark a bill of sale as having been paid in full. No other payments would be needed- ever.

Jesus freed us, healed us, restored us.

Resurrection Sunday is the day when we can celebrate this Victory over Hell– over the ultimate slave owner- sin- forever.

We can embrace the incredible sense of shackles falling to the ground, of being lifted from the floor, being pulled up out of the muck, mire, and despair we have lived in all our lives. When we accept this amazing gift of God’s grace in our lives, we are free- our chains are gone.

All because of Jesus.

We are alive, we are whole. We are new.

The words of the hymn, Amazing Grace, break me every time I hear the first notes played. This is my history and also my future.

Is it your story? Is it your future?

Make today the day you sing with all your being, “I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.”
