your honor

The news is full of stories of outrageous behavior. People treating others as beneath them, spewing disrespect and hate, without concerning themselves with the consequences. God didn’t design us with different ranks, He created us equally in His image. Romans 2:11 even says, There is no favoritism with God (HCSB).  But we don’t act like it. We seem to believe despising people for being different is acceptable in God’s economy. But hatred never built anything.

Today as my husband and I drove to work we passed two people sharing a conversation in the early morning light. By their dress they were very poor, possibly homeless, but it wasn’t evident in the way they spoke with each other. Their body language was engaging, they saw each other as two people worth getting to know better. It was a sweet moment for me to see.

Later on, I spoke with a woman from a well-to-do suburb of Chicago. As we talked she mentioned that she was living out of her car. My heart hurt for her, surrounded by multi-million dollar homes with people shopping at “all the right stores” went by her every day, never seeing her, just seeing the stigma of a homeless person in their midst.

I wonder how we can feel that we are being honorable, when we don’t look at people in the same way that Jesus sees them? We are called to be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10).

A friend posted this in the past few days, I found it fit the way my heart has been beating. “This day and every day remembering that we are more than worthwhile. We are priceless, immeasurably valuable, children of the living God” (Todd Eckstein). The only way we can be honorable is to give honor to others – to receive our worth from God Himself, He is the one who made us.

This hymn explains my heartbeat. May it be yours too, O Best Beloved.

We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord

And we pray that all unity
May one day be restored
And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, By our love
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love

We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
And together we’ll spread the news
That God is in our land

We will work with each other
We will work side by side
We will work with each other
We will work side by side
And we’ll guard each man’s dignity
And save each man’s pride

All praise to the Father
From whom all things come
And all praise to Christ Jesus His only son
And all praise to the Spirit
Who makes us one
